"The Department of Natural Resources and Environment has received recent reports of syringes washing up on Lake Michigan-area beaches from Shelby to Arcadia. It is suspected that the syringes are from a major combined sewer overflow that occurred in the Milwaukee area on July 25."

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment announced today that air monitoring in Belding has identified higher than acceptable levels of lead in the air, and that a local company has been identified as the source of the emissions and is in the process of upgrading emissions control equipment.

There's a destructive liquid flowing into the Gulf of Mexico — and it's not oil.


It's the muddy fresh water of the Mississippi River, which has been released from southern Louisiana's vast levee system and into estuaries in greater quantities than usual. The goal has been to use the rush of fresh water to keep sticky oil from reaching the sandy shores of the state.

"BP will begin its legal offensive this month to cap its liabilities from the Gulf of Mexico disaster by offering those affected one-off compensation payouts in return for them waiving the right to sue. US lawyers say tens of thousands of affected people in the Gulf, particularly those in the fishing and tourism industries, are weeks away from bankruptcy."

David Beckman from the Natural Resource Defense Counsel calls "the oil spill an 'unprecedented and unfolding disaster,' Beckman says that 'oil has heavy metal and toxic chemicals that you may be breathing in on a contaminated beach.' Coming into direct contact with the oil may cause a host of health problems including headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and skin rashes and irritation."
